The next instalment....

Scene 13: (In this scene, it is difficult when we come to Smeagol/Gollum, I have tried to show the difference now so it is clearer later on when his two egos fight) Sam takes a step but his foot sticks in the ground and sinks.

Sam: Urgh, its a bog, hes lead us into a swamp!

Smeagol: A swamp yes, yes! Come master, we will take you on safe paths through the mist. Come hobbits come, we go quickly.

Pans out for view of the dead marshes as Gollum speaks.

Smeagol: I found it. I did. The way through the marshes. Orcs dont use it, orcs dont know it, they go round for miles and miles. Come quickly, swift and quick as shadows we must be.

While walking Sam glances down into the water. Under the surface there are hundred of bodies and deathly white faces, eyes closed, staring upwards at them.

Sam: There are dead things, dead faces in the water.

Smeagol: All dead, all rotten. Elves, and men and orcses. A great battle, long ago. The dead marshes. Yes, yes, that is the name. This way. Dont follow the lights.

Sam stumbles into the water.

Smeagol: Careful now! Or hobbits go down to join the dead ones, and light little candles of their own.

Sam and Gollum continue to walk, Frodo is wandering off by himself towards the water. He sees a dead face and we fly over its body until we are almost eye-to-eye. Sam turns and sees Frodo falling forwards.

Sam: Frodo!

Frodo keeps looking at the dead man, suddenly its eyes open but its eyes are glowing a strange blue hue. Frodo falls in, under the water Frodo is in a surreal dimension, the dead are reaching up to him, their faces are deathly pale and their faces contorted and frightening. Frodo feels a hand on his shoulder, he thinks it is a dead one, but it is Gollum who pulls him up out of the water. He looks at Gollum in amazement, panting for breath.

Frodo: Gollum?

Smeagol: Dont, follow the lights.

Gollum moves away and Frodo watches him.

Frodo: Gollum?

Sam reaches them.

Sam: Mr Frodo! Are you all right?

Scene 14: Mount Doom at night in the distance, panning round it falls on the sleeping Sam. Frodo has his back to him and is awake, the ring is in the palm of his hand, and he is stroking it. Gollum is in the background when he speaks, Frodo starts and puts the ring back under his shirt. He turns to watch Gollum who is stroking a fish.

Gollum: Sooo bright. Sooo beautiful. Ahhhh, precious!

Frodo: What did you say?

Gollum: Master should be resting. Master needs to keep up his strength.

Frodo: Who are you?

Gollum: Mustnt ask us, not its business. Gollum, Gollum.

Frodo: Gandalf told me you were one of the river folk.

Gollum: Singing. Cold be heart and hand and bone, and cold be travellers far from home.

Frodo: He said that you life was a sad story.

Gollum: Singing. They do not see what lies ahead, when sun has failed and moon is dead.

Frodo: You were not so very different from a hobbit once. Were you? Smeagol?

A look of surprise and recognition flashes across Gollums face.

Gollum: What did you call me?

Frodo: That was your name once, wasnt it, a long time ago?

Gollum: My name, my name?

A smile creeps onto Gollums face.

Smeagol: Smeagol!

Suddenly there is a screech from the sky far above. Sam awakens, Gollum shouts.

Sam: Black riders!

Smeagol: Ahhhh! Hide! Hide!

Frodo has a sudden flashback of the Nazgul attacking him at Weathertop and he falls to the ground clutching his shoulder as he remembers the Morgul blade. Sam rushes out to Frodo.

Sam: Come on Frodo! Come on!

Smeagol: Quick! They will see us. They will see us.

Sam drags Frodo under the cover of the bush and they look out anxiously.

Sam: I thought they were dead.

Smeagol: Dead!? No, you cannot kill them, no.

We see a pair of spiky metal fisticuffs, obviously one of the Nazgul. The screen pans out and we see that the Nazgul is no longer on horseback but on the back of a gigantic flying reptile.

Smeagol: Wings! Wraiths of wings!

Frodo is being tempted by the wraiths power to put on the ring, his hand creeps inside his shirt to pull out the chain. Smeagol is watching him, a hungered look in his eye.

Smeagol: They are calling for it. They are calling for the precious.

The ring is nearly on Frodos finger, Sam turns and sees, he quickly snatches away his hand, holding it in his own.

Sam: Frodo! Its all right. Youll be all right.

The wraith starts to leave, its monstrous steed screeching. The Nazgul leave, we pan back to Gollum and then Sam and Frodo who are still holding hands. They look at their hands and let go.

Smeagol: Hurry hobbits. The black gate is very close.

Scene 14: A branch hangs in front of the screen; it is covered in black goo. Gimli puts his finger in it and licks it off his finger.

Gimli: Ptoi! Orc blood.

They are walking through Fangorn. Legolas stops and looks to Aragorn who is crouched to the ground.

Aragorn: These are strange tracks.

Gimli: The air is so close in here.

Legolas: This forest is old, very old. Full of memory, and anger.

The sound of creaking branches can be heard, Gimli growls and brings up is axe.

Legolas: The trees are speaking to each other.

Aragorn: Gimli!

Gimli: Huh!?

Aragorn gestures for him to lower his weapon.

Aragorn: Lower you axe.

Gimli: Oh!

Gimli looks around nervously and lowers his axe slowly.

Legolas runs ahead and stops.

Legolas: Aragorn, nad no ennas. (Theres something out there)

Aragorn comes up behind Legolas.

Aragorn: Man cenith? (What do you see?)

Legolas: The white wizard approaches.

Close up of Legolas eyes, he signals to Aragorn and Gimli to arm themselves.

Aragorn: Do not let him speak, for he will put a spell on us.

They all get ready to fight, raising their weapons, Aragorn draws his sword, Legolas nicks his bow and Gimli unsheathes an axe.

Aragorn: We must be quick.

They suddenly whip round; Gimli throws his axe and Legolas fires an arrow at a brilliant white light in front of them. The thing inside the white light moves and blocks them both, the axe smashes into many pieces and the arrow just disintegrates. Aragorns sword becomes red-hot and glows, he drops it to the floor and all three shield their eyes from the bright light. The white figure speaks.

White Figure: You are tracking the footsteps of two young hobbits.

Aragorn: Where are they?

White Figure: They passed this way, the day before yesterday. They met someone they did not expect, does that comfort you?

Aragorn: Who are you, show yourself!

The light dims around the figures face, its Gandalf. Aragorn stands in staring, unbelieving, Legolas bends to his knees in respect and Gimli bows his head.

Aragorn: It cannot be. You fell.

Gandalf: Through fire and water.

Flashback to the fight with the Balrog, they are on a high peak fighting, it is snowing heavily.

Gandalf: From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought him, the Balrog of Morgoth.

Gandalf wields Glamdring and lights hit the blade, he stabs the Balrog and it falls backwards off the edge off. It hits the ground below, it is no longer alight, its flames have gone out, it is dead and it lays smoking on the snow covered ground.

Gandalf: Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside.

Gandalf stumbles a small distance, he is bloodied and burnt, he falls to the floor, blood is pouring from his nose. The camera goes in through his eye, he is now in a surreal dimension, stars and bright colours flash past in the darkness.

Gandalf: Darkness took me and I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled and every day was as long as a life age of the earth.

Gandalf, no longer injured, suddenly awakens and gasps, everything is bright and bathed in white light.

Gandalf: But it was not the end, I felt life, in me again. I have sent back until my task is done.

Aragorn: In awe, while stepping forwards. Gandalf.

Gandalf: Gandalf? Yes, that was what they used to call me, Gandalf the grey. That was my name.

Gimli: Gandalf!

Gandalf: I am Gandalf the white and I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide.

Scene 15: Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas are now walking to the edge of Fangorn.

Gandalf: One stage of your journey is over, another begins. War has come to Rohan, we must ride to Edoras with all speed.

The have reached the edges of Fangorn and Gandalf whistles. A neigh is heard in reply. A brilliantly white horse runs towards them, Gandalf smiles.

Legolas: That is one of the marias, unless my eyes are cheated by some spell.

The horse continues to run towards them, it reaches them, Gandalf smiles and it nuzzles him.

Gandalf: Shadowfax, lord of all horses, and he has been my friend through many dangers.

Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf ride off across Rohan as dusk draws in.

Scene 16: Treebeard is making a slow but steady pace through Fangorn. He is talking with Merry and Pippin who are seated in his branches.

Treeebeard: My home, I sleep in the forest here. The roots of the mountain. I told Gandalf I would keep you safe and safe is where Ill keep you. The trees have grown wild and dangerous; anger festers in their hearts. They will harm you if they can. There are too few of us now, too few of us is to manage them.

Scene 17: A new scene of Frodo and Sam struggling up a steep embankment with Gollum up ahead. We can see that there is a huge dark gate with watch posts on either side hundreds of feet high. Behind it there is darkness and all around the land is barren and sparse.

Smeagol: The black gate of Mordor!

Smeagol is sitting on his haunches hiding his face in his hand mumbling, Sam reaches the top before Frodo.

Sam: Oh, save us.

Sam looks on in awe, Gollum continue to sit there face in hands.

Smeagol: Gollum. No, no, no.

Frodo reaches the top and his eyes widen.

Sam: My old Gaffer would have a thing or two to say if he could see us now.

Smeagol: Master says to show him the way into Mordor; so good Smeagol does what master says so.

Frodo: So I did.

They watch in horror as hundreds of men from distant lands, Easterlings, march up to the black gate. They go up to the black gate, we see a scene up high looking over the gate down on the advancing men, and orcs are patrolling the top.

Sam: Well thats it then. We cant get past them.

We watch from the hobbits point of view as the men go up to the gate. A horn sounds; Gollum covers his ears and shakes his head. Camera goes up over the gate and we see orcs blowing the horns, then 2 gigantic trolls, who are tied to the gates, start to pull them open letting the men in.

Sam: Look! The gate, its opening.

The huge gates start opening slowly. Sam climbs to a ridge and looks over.

Sam: I can see a way down.

Frodo: Sam no!

The earth cracks and Sam falls over the edge screaming. Frodo follows after him running down the hill of rock.

Smeagol: Master!

He runs down noisily, one of the Easterlings stops and looks up to where there is a cloud of dust on the hill. Frodo reaches Sam who it buried up to his waste in the ground. Two Easterlings head straight fro them. They try to pull but he is stuck fast, Frodo throws his elven cloak over them both, they are hidden well and the men walk off after a few seconds. Frodo throws back the cloak and what looks like a rock turns out to be the hobbits; the Easterlings continue to head for the gate. Frodo watches the easterlings entering, Sam joins his side.

Frodo: I did not ask you to come with me Sam.

They get ready to run to the gate.

Sam: I know you didnt Mr Frodo. I doubt even these elven cloaks will hide us in there.

The start forwards quickly:

Frodo: Now!

Smeagol: Noooo!

Smeagol grabs them both and pulls them back.

Smeagol: No. No master, they catch you! They catch you!

Frodo tries to go again, but Gollum pulls him back once more.

Smeagol: No dont take it to him. He wants the precious. Always he is looking for it, and the precious is wanting to go back to him.

Gollum: But we mustnt let him have it.

The black gates nearly closed, Frodo goes to run again, but Gollum grabs his leg.

Smeagol: No! Theres another way in. More secret, a dark way.

Sam: Why havent you spoken of this before?

Smeagol: Because master did not ask.

Sam: Hes up to something.

Frodo: Are you saying theres another way into Mordor?

Smeagol: Yes, theres a path and some stairs and then a tunnel.

He is pawing at Frodo, they watch as the gate closes more and more, Frodo sighs. He turns and looks at Gollum who is burying his head into his cloak.

Frodo: He has lead us this far Sam.

Sam: Mr Frodo, no.

Frodo: Hes been true to his word.

Smeagol lifts his head and looks straight at Frodo, Sam shakes his head.

Sam: No.

Frodo: Lead the way Smeagol.

Smeagol: Good Smeagol always helps.

Smeagol walks off, Sam looks at Frodo in disappointment, Frodo looks away, towards the black gates, they noisily clang shut, they now have not choice, they must use the pass of Cirith Ungol.

Scene 18: Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and Gandalf ride towards Edoras. They stop as they go over a hill and it comes into sight.

Gandalf: Edoras, and the golden hall of Meadowsfeld. There dwells Theoden, king of Rohan.

Gandalf over tone as Eowyn is shown holding Theodens stroking it: Whose mind is overthrown, Sarumans hold over king Thoedens mind is now very strong.

Eowyn: My lord, your son, he is dead. My lord, uncle. Will you not go to him, will you do nothing?

Scene back to Gandalf, Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli.

Gandalf: Be careful what you say, do not look for welcome here.

Scene 19: Eowyn is crying over the dead body of Theodred, Grima appears at the doorway.

Grima: Oh he, he must have died sometime in the night. What a tragedy for the king to lose his only son and heir. I understand his passing is hard to except,

He puts a hand on Eowyns shoulder.

Grima: especially now that your brother had deserted you.

She shakes him off angrily and gets up.

Eowyn: Leave me alone snake!

Grima: Oh but you are alone. Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness, in the bitter watches of the night, when all your life seems to shrink. The walls of your bower closing in about you, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in.

He raises his hand and caresses her cheek.

Grima: So fair, so cold, like a morning of pale spring still clinging to winters chill.

They stare intently at each other for a while, Eowyn seems to almost be under his spell, we unsure for a moment is she is going to accept his advances, suddenly she pulls away.

Eowyn: Your words are poison.

She then storms out of the room and out the huge main doors of Meduseld, she is weeping and she looks down to spot 3 tiny riding figures. As she stands there a flag bearing the white horse of Rohan, which is already battered and torn suddenly breaks free of the pole and flutters off. As G, L Gimli and A reach the gates to enter Edoras the flag lands by Aragorns side. Long shot of Edoras panning round and showing the golden hall of Meduseld. As they ride up through Edoras the mood is sombre, the people watch them cautiously. Aragorn looks up and sees a white lady standing in front of Meduseld.

Gimli: Youd find more cheer in a graveyard.

Aragorn looks back up to the place where the woman was before but she has gone.

The doors of Meduseld open and out strides Hama and some of his men, just as the 4 of them are coming up the steps. He stops them and Gandalf looks up smiling.

Gandalf: Ah!

Hama: I cannot allow you before Theoden king so armed, Gandalf Greyhame. By order of, (said with visible disgust) Grima Wormtounge.

Gandalf nods to the others who reluctantly start to give up their weapons. Legolas swings his twin knives over his shoulder and spins them into the man's hands, hilt first, obviously showing off to Gimli, who just looks disapproving and hands over his axe. Aragorn stares at the man taking his weapons grimly, straight into his eyes unfaltering in penetrating gaze.

Hama: Your staff.

Hama gestures to his staff, Gandalf pretends not to hear. Looking at his staff and back at Hama. Feigning ignorance, then pretending to suddenly understand.

Gandalf: Oh, you would not part old man from his walking stick.

Hama looks disapproving and suspicious at Gandalfs innocent look but relents and sighs. Gandalf gives a sly wink to Aragorn who smiles and they start to follow Hama and his men inside. Gandalf starts to lean on Legolas, Hama bows before the king and the 4 of them advance up the hall. Grima is sitting by the king watching.

Grima: My lord, Gandalf the grey is coming.

The doors shut behind them and Legolas turns briefly, letting go of Gandalf. As they continue to walk, men walk along at the side watching them carefully.

Grima: Hes a herald of woe.

Gandalf: The courtesy of your hall has some what lessened of late, Theoden king.

Grima: He is not welcome my lord.

Theoden speaks to Gandalf in a dry and withered voice, slowly and laboriously.

Theoden: Why should I welcome you Gandalf Stormcrow? Whilst turning to Grima for reassurance.

Grima: A just question my liege. Turning to Gandalf. Late, is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear. Lathspell I name him. Ill news is an ill guest.

Gandalf: Be silence! Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm.

Gandalf revels his staff and brandishes it at Grima.

Grima: His staff! I TOLD you to take the wizards staff.

Grimas men step forward and start to fight, Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli fight them off while Gandalf walks forward .The man beside Hama goes to draw his sword but Hama stops him. Gandalf walks through the brawl towards Theoden.

Gandalf: Theoden, son of Thengel, too long have you sat in the shadows.

Grima starts to try and crawl away but Gimli puts his foot on his chest.

Gimli: I would stay still if I were you.

Grima: Harken to me!

All of the people in the hall have now stopped fighting, unconscious bodies scattered on the floor, as they all turn to Theoden.

Gandalf: I release you.

He holds his hand out Theoden and shuts his eyes.

Gandalf: from his spell.

Theoden starts to laugh strangely, Gandalf opens his eye as he realises that it is not his own voice, but Sarumans.

Saruman through Theoden: You have no power here, Gandalf the grey.

Gandalf looks at him menacingly and throws back his grey cloak to reveal his white clothing underneath, he seems to almost radiate light. Theoden/Saruman gasps and turns his head, Legolas face is bathed in the white light.

Gandalf: I shall draw you Saruman as poison is drawn from a wound.

He advances even closer towards Theoden whose face has started to contort in agony, Gandalf raises his staff to him. Just then Eowyn enters the room and see her uncle, what looks to her, being attacked, she runs to him but is grabbed and held back by Aragorn.

Aragorn: Wait. (To Eoywn, he then gestures for her to watch)

Saruman through Theoden: If I go, Theoden dies.

Gandalf points his staff and Theoden is thrown back into his chair.

Gandalf: You did not kill me and you will not kill him.

Theoden wheezes and finds it hard to speak; Saruman uses him to speak once more.

Saruman through Theoden: Rohan is mine.

Theoden is thrown back into his chair once more even harder.

Gandalf: Be gone!

Theoden resist for a moment and in one last desperate attempt lunges forward shouting. But Gandalf smites him with his staff and as Theoden falls back into his chair we see Saruman is thrown back across the floor from his palantir. He tries to lift his head and sighs. Gandalf looks on Theoden and also sighs, Theoden moans and starts to falls forwards. Eowyn shakes herself free from Aragorn and runs to him, holding him up to face her. As she does so he begins to change, he begins to grow magically younger until he looks not 50 years old. He looks at Eowyn.

Theoden: I know your face.

He stops a moment them he remembers.

Theoden: Eoywn!

Eowyn starts to weep and hugs him. Gandalf moves forwards and Theoden looks up at him, he looks startled by who he sees.

Theoden: Gandalf!

Gandalf: Breath the free air again my friend.

Theoden stands up and gazes around, Gandalf moves back smiling and everyone watches Theoden.

Theoden: Dark have been my dreams of late.

He looks down at his hands.

Gandalf: Your fingers would remember their own strength better, if they grasped your sword.

Hama steps forward with his sword and offers it hilt first. Grima tries to escape but Gimli absent-minded sits on him while watching the king and Eoywn smiles and tears start to roll down her face. Theoden grasps it and pulls it out of the hilt slowly holding it up to his face inspecting it intently. He suddenly looks grimly at Grima and we next see Grima being hurled down the steps outside Meduseld. When he reaches the bottom there is blood seeping from a cracked lip and he cries out in pain. Theoden follows him to the bottom each step he takes Grima shuffles further backwards.

Grima: Ive only ever served you my lord.

Theoden: Your witchcraft, would have had me crawling on all fours like a beast.

A crowd has gathered to watch from the village, Theoden raises his sword to kill Grima but Aragorn steps in and stops him holding him while he shakes with rage.

Aragorn: No my Lord! Let him go, enough blood has been spilled on his account.

Grima has by now got up and runs through the crowd of villagers pushing people out of his path.

Grima: Get outta my way!

Gandalf, Hama and the others watch him with disgust. The villages start to cheer.

Villager: Hail Theoden king!

All of the people bow in honour as Grima rides out of the gates of Edoras away to Isengard. Theoden turns from the villagers to Aragorn who then also bows in honour and Theoden looks for a moment then turns, frowning, he looks at Gandalf.

Theoden: Where is Theodred? Where is my son?

Scene 20: We are now in front of a stone door of a tomb. A single white flower appears in the screen.

Theoden: Simbelmyne.

He throws it and it floats gracefully to the ground.

Theoden: Ever has it grown on the tombs of my fore bears. Now it shall cover the grave of my son.

View of all the tombs, all are covered in the white flowers.

Theoden: Alas, that these evil days should be mine. The young perish and the old linger. That I should live to see the last days of my house.

Gandalf: Theodred's death was not of your making.

Theoden: No parent should have to bury their child.

Theodens face is strong at first but he suddenly cracks and starts to sob, covering his face with a hand and falling to his knees.

Gandalf: He was strong in life, his spirit will find its way to the halls of your fathers. Westu hal. Ferdu, Theodred, Ferdu. (Be-thou well. Go-thou, Theodred, go-thou.)

Wide-shot, Gandalf bows his head and starts to walk off, leaving the weeping Theoden alone for a while. But as he walks off he hears footfalls and turns to see a horse with two young children on its back. They are both barely alive and the boy hasnt the strength to hold on any more and falls to the ground. It is the children from the Rohan village, Freya and Eothane.

Scene 21: Eothane is now conscious and eating with his sister inside, Eowyn is tending to them. Aragorn is sitting smoking his pipe, Gimli is sat opposite eating sloppily, Legolas is stood behind Aragorn. Gandalf is sitting beside Theoden who is on his throne.

Eowyn: They had no warning, they were unarmed. Now the wild men are moving through the Westford burning as they go; rick, cot and tree.

Freya: Wheres Mama.

Eowyn: Shhhh.

Theodens head is in his hands again. Gandalf stretches his hand toward the children.

Gandalf: This is but a taste of the terror that Saruman will unleash. All the more the potent for he is driven now by the fear of Sauron. Ride out and meet him head on, draw him away from your women and children, you must fight.

Aragorn: You have 2000 good men riding north as we speak. Eomer is loyal to you his men will return and fight for their king.

Theoden: They will be 300 leagues from here by now. Eomer cannot help us. I know what it is you want of me, but I will not risk further death to my people. I will not risk open war.

Aragorn: Open war is upon you, whether you will risk it or not.

Theoden stops and turns and then advances towards Aragorn.

Theoden: When last I looked, Theoden, not Aragorn was king of Rohan.

Gimli who is taking a big swig of his drink noisily clatters his mug down on the table and belches, drink pouring down his beard. Gandalf walks towards Theoden.

Gandalf: Then what is the kings decision?

Theoden turns towards the camera.

Scene 22: Hama is walking through Edoras shouting out to the people.

Hama: By order of the king, the city must empty. We make for the refuge of Helms Deep. Do not burden yourselves with treasures, take only what provisions you need.

Gimli, Legolas, Gandalf and Aragorn walk behind through the crowds, we leave the scene of the village and follow them into the horse stables.

Gimli: Helms deep, they flee to the mountains when they should stand and fight. Who will defend them if not their king?

Aragorn: He is only doing what he thinks is best for his people. Helms deep has saved them in the past.

Gimli: There is no way out of that ravine. Theoden is walking into a trap thinks he is leading them to safety, what they will be is massacred.

They reach the stable in which Shadowfax is housed and stop.

Gandalf: Theoden has a strong will, but I fear for him, I fear for the survival of Rohan. He will need you before the end Aragorn, the people of Rohan will need you. The defences have to hold.

Aragorn: They will hold.

Gandalf starts to stroke Shadowfax.

Gandalf: The grey pilgrim, thats what they used to call me. Three hundred lives of men Ive walked this earth and now, I have no time. Good luck.

He mounts Shadowfax.

Gandalf: my search will not be in vain. Look to my coming at first light on the 5th day. At dawn, look to the east.

Aragorn nods and Gandalf spurs Shadowfax on, he rides fast through the stables and out through Edoras, then across Rohan in his search for the Eorlings.

Scene 23: Eowyn opens a chest of weapons, around her men are rushing about getting every thing packed up and ready to go to Helms deep. She picks out a sword and unsheathes it, bringing it up to her face and touching the blade. She takes a couple of swoops with the sword and then turns quickly and clashes swords with Aragorn. She looks very startled and stares intensely at him for a few seconds before drawing away her sword.

Aragorn: You have some skill with a blade.

Eowyn stares for a moment before pushing her blade away and facing it at Aragorn.

Eowyn: The women of this country learned long ago that those without swords can still die upon them. I fear neither death nor pain.

Aragorn: What do you fear my lady?

Eowyn: A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them, and all chance of valour has gone beyond recall or desire.

Aragorn: You are a daughter of kings, a shield maiden of Rohan. I do not think that will be your fate.

Eoywn looks at him and opens her mouth but no words come out and she just stares at him as he walks off.

Scene 24: All the people of Edoras are leaving out through the gates, Theoden stops on top of a hill and looks back at Edoras on last time. He spurs his horse on and we pan out for a long view of Edoras as Grima starts to speak.

Grima: Theoden will not stay at Edoras.

Grima is now in Orthanc at Isengard and is nursing his cut lip with a white cloth.

Grima: Its vulnerable, he knows this. He will expect an attack on the city. The will flee to Helms deep, the great fortress of Rohan.

We see the people walking across land as Grima continues to speak; there are scenes of old people struggling along and people suffering.

Grima: It is a dangerous road to take through the mountains. It will be slow they will have women and children with them.

Saruman goes to the pits of Isengard and tells one of his orcs.

Saruman: Send out your warg riders.

The orc smiles at him and in the pits we can hear barking and vicious growling and see the shadows of huge beasts cast against the walls.

Scene 25: Gollum is chasing down a river of rocks after a fish, he catches it and it slips out of his fingers and he rolls along the ground after it.

Sam: Hey stinker, dont go getting to far ahead.

Frodo: Why do you do that?

Sam: What?
Frodo: Calling him names putting him down all the while?

Sam: Because, thats what he is Mr Frodo. Theres noubt left in him but lies and deceit. Its the ring he wants, its all he cares about.

Frodo: You have no idea what it did to him, what its still doing to him. I want to help him Sam.

Sam: Why?

Frodo: Because I have to believe he can come back.

Frodo walks past Sam and watches Gollum who is standing on a rock with a huge smile on his face panting like a dog.

Sam: You cant save him Mr Frodo.

Frodo suddenly gets angry and spiteful, he lashes out at Sam.

Frodo: What do you know about it, nothing.

Sam looks into Frodos eyes, his own full of hurt, he walks silently past Frodo not looking at him, Frodo looks down, ashamed of what he had just said.

Frodo: Im sorry Sam I dont know why I said that.

Sam: I do, its the ring. You cant take your eyes off it. Ive seen you, youre not eating, and youre barely sleeping. Its taking hold of you Mr Frodo, you have to fight it.

He lashes out again at Sam shouting straight into his face.

Frodo: I know what I have to do Sam, the ring was entrusted to me, mine, my own.

He storms off, knowing what he has just done but not wanting to admit it.

Sam: Cant you hear yourself? Cant you hear who you sound like?

Scene 26: Frodo and Sam are asleep on the floor; Gollum is in the foreground awake the scene closes in on Frodos hand in which he holds the ring.

Gollum: We wants it, we needs it, must have the precious. They stole it form us, sneaky little hobbitses, wicked, tricksy, false.

Smeagol: No, master, yes. Precious, false.

Gollum: They will cheat you, hurt you, lie!

Smeagol: Masters my friend.

Gollum: You dont have any friends, no body likes you.

Smeagol: Not listening, im not listening.

Gollum: Youre a liar and a thief.

Smeagol: No!

Gollum: Murderer!

Smeagol: You win. Starts to sob.

Gollum: Go away! Laughs.

Smeagol: I hate you, I hate you.

Gollum: Where would you be without me? I saved us, it was me, we survived because of me.

Smeagol: Not any more.

Gollum: What did you say?

Smeagol: Master looks after us now, we dont need you.

Gollum: What?

Smeagol: Leave now and never come back!

Gollum: No!

Smeagol: Leave now and never come back!

Gollum: Gets angry and starts hissing.

Smeagol: Even more emphasis. Leave now and never come back!

There is silence, Smeagol looks around worried for a moment but he then looks happy as if he cant believe it.

Smeagol: We told him to go away and away he goes precious, gone, gone, gone. Smeagols free!
